Important Information
Geneva is regarded as one of the most liveable cities in the world, and it is also one of the most enjoyable to explore as a tourist. While it is certainly incredibly safe and the locals are famously friendly, it does pay to be aware of particular situations so that your stay can be more enjoyable.
Transport
The Swiss government is very much in favour of reducing the number of private vehicles on the country's roads. This is one of the main reasons public transport is promoted so heavily and why the Geneva local government provides free access to tourists. Geneva is awash with cyclists, thanks in part to the city's extensive cycling network, and it pays to be aware of this if you are visiting the city with your car.
Winter
If you are planning to visit Geneva during the winter months be prepared for freezing temperatures and days that don't rise above 0°C. The ski resorts around Geneva commonly get a fair amount of snow in the later winter months and Geneva can become awash with tourists going to and from the slopes. The lake also freezes during winter, though locals hold an annual swimming competition in December despite the chill.
